Openreach has announced that 94 new rural towns and villages across Northern Ireland will soon benefit from super-fast, Full Fibre broadband over the next 2 years, as well as an increase from 26,000 to 39,000 premises in Wales.

On 14th July 2020, Openreach announced that the 94 locations span across Northern Ireland, including Kilrea, Londonderry, Lisbellaw, Fermanagh, Warrenpoint, County Down and Fintona – all of which will have a faster, more reliable broadband by March 2022.

It has been reported that overall, 124 locations across Northern Ireland have now been included in the Openreach build, with over 100 new apprentice engineers to be recruited over the coming months to support the build plans across the region.

Wales

On 20th July 2020, Openreach announced that more homes and businesses across Wales are set to benefit from super-fast fibre broadband thanks to an Openreach partnership with the Welsh Government. According to Openreach, most homes and businesses in Wales already have access to super-fast broadband – 95% in fact, following the completion of the ‘Superfast Cymru’ project.

The partnership has led to an agreement of an extension funded by £30m from the Welsh Government and European Union to increase the number of premises who can access Full Fibre broadband from 26,000 to 39,000. The extension is set to target local authority areas with less than 90% superfast broadband coverage.

While the vast majority of premises in Wales have access to superfast broadband, thanks to the earlier Welsh Government intervention through Superfast Cymru, we know we need to reach the final premises without access.”
